Maybe moving to Japan?

Hello – so I’ve got a lot of experience working in schools at various levels as a Teaching Assistant, a lead for Literacy, even started a Primary teaching course before decided that wasn’t for me – but I’ve been at my current job for two years in a secondary school and love it. The trouble is, the pay as a TA (even if you’re the lead and have specialised) is shocking and there’s no career advancement. I’ve also always wanted to travel.

Both of my parents lived and taught abroad through TEFL – so I got myself a TEFL qualification and started applying to places in Japan. I’d been promised a job at Shane schools, but they’ve dropped me last minute and now the end of the school year is fast approaching (6 weeks away) and I’ve handed in my notice. I get on really well with my boss, so could certainly stay on and get my job back if I need to – but the people around me are all moving on, leaving the school – and I really want to do the same. The only interview I’ve managed to scramble together is one with ‘NOVA’ on Monday – but from what I’ve found online it looks like they’re awful – people seem to have dreadful experiences and get rinsed.

I’m not looking to live in Japan forever, I was hoping for at least a year (although I guess I could do less) so I can have the chance to experience another culture – and explore! From what I’ve seen though it looks like there’s a decent chance I’ll end up in the middle of nowhere with no real free time and bad pay. That’d actually be worse than staying where I am – at least I can afford to live here!

Any advice would be massively appreciated!
