Visiting with a lot of Allergies

Hi, I will be visiting Okinawa in December. I am excited for the trip and doing my best to learn some Japanese before I go. However, my Japanese is very beginner level and I have a lot of dietary restrictions/allergies and I am concerned with how to navigate them. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Allergies: severe tree nut allergy (cashews, pistachios, walnuts, pecans)

Dietary Restrictions: Lentils, Clams, Garlic, Artichokes, Dairy and Gluten

  1. Google translate is really good, you can use it to take a photo of your allergy card to show the server and the cooks. The majority of people in food service here speak some degree of English. I would be sure to practice some dialogue surrounding “severe allergy” and try having a sign on your backpack/bag in Japanese stating where your epipen is located for an emergency.

  2. If you have a mobile device, using ChatGPT for translation and it can also read out loud the translated sentences.
