How to properly transfer a bike to a friend

I'm planning to give a bike to a friend and cannot find the original registration paper from when I first bought the bike (bike still has registration sticker). Is it alright if I just go to a bike store or a koban with my friend and do the ownership transfer there without the original paperwork? And do I need to do that in my prefecture, or can we do it near my friends place?
