Gift giving: what colour wrapping paper?

I understand the colour of wrapping paper has symbolic meaning Japan, but I’ve read a lot of conflicting advice about what the colours mean. For example, in one article I read that white signifies purity and in another that it indicates mourning. One article suggested purple shows respect, another said wealth and a third said death.

I’d like to give a gift as a sign of appreciation / respect. What is the appropriate colour for the wrapping paper?

  1. Most people just get the store to wrap things so the answer is “whatever paper the store uses.”

Bags are more common for self-wrapping because it’s easier to make them look nice.

  2. Whatever you have at hand. No one cares at all. Do not overthink this. A shop bag is perfectly acceptable.
