How do I start a message with “I have a question”?

こんにちは!

I quite frequently want to ask my 日本語の先生, who is a native Japanese, about some cultural aspects, which are unrelated to our overall studying process.
I don’t want to seem blunt or randomly throw things in, so I was wondering if there is any appropriate way to start a message with a phase like “excuse me, I have a question…” or “I have an odd/random question…”.

よろしくお願いします!

  1. ちょっと聞きたいことがあるんですけど…
If you want to be extra-polite, use 伺う instead: 伺いたいこと, or even more polite, お伺いしたいこと.

  2. My professors are also native japanese speakers and suggested we say:

    質問してもいいですか

Which is the grammatical pattern for requesting permission. It translates to “may I ask a question?”.

    Hope this is helpful!
