This might be a dumb question and might have been answered before, if so, my apologies in advance. I am half Japanese/half American. I was born in Japan but raised in the states. I still have my Japanese passport (not expired) but I am unsure if I am still a Japanese national because I failed to declare my Japanese nationality by age 22 (am 28 now). I didn’t know I had to declare by 22 because my parents failed to tell me anything growing up. I want to retain my Japanese citizenship, but I am not sure how to proceed.

If you didn’t renounce it you still have it, when you renew your passport tell them that you’re going to make a decision about it and then don’t. It’s very common.

According to this rag it’s upward of 90 percent of people in your situation don’t declare. It’s kind of a don’t ask don’t tell thing
If you don’t have any other citizenship then no you haven’t lost it because you cannot be left stateless in that manner. If you do have US citizenship, it gets a bit more complex but it doesn’t seem the Japanese government does much about chasing it down.
