Current anime trends

Hi, I am going to Japan in two weeks and wanted to ask what anime/manga is currently very popular/hyped.

Last year in Japan I missed the whole Demon Slayer hype and merchandise by not watching the show at that point.

  1. Believe me when I say. Whatever is the hot new shit at the time, you will notice immediately. Because Adds everywhere. Not necessarily for that show / manga alone, but just characters used for ads in general. And when you reach areas like Akihabara, Shibuya and Ikebukuro it becomes impossible to miss.

  2. I was in Ikebukuro and the anime MASHLE opening music was on giant screens playing nonstop.

  3. Tbh I can’t tell much new that I am not specifically into apart these days. The Kyoto Manga Museum had a Dungeon Meshi goods exclusive thing and Strawberry Prince was just about everywhere.

If you’re interested in a title, do a quick check on Twitter for any collab events or exhibitions. They’re old but I always able to catch pop ups and cafes for Fushigi Yuugi, Heidi Girl of the Alps, Yuu Yuu Hakusho, and Princess Tutu between July-August this year. And I’m bummed to be missing a Tokimeki Tonight event next month.

  4. I still see Oshi No Ko at Lawson, etc. and also billboard ads across the Shibuya scramble crossway

  5. I’m also going to Japan in the next week and half and will be going to the Kusuriya no Hitorigoto (The Apothecary Diaries) exhibition in Shibuya. The first season just finished this spring. Season 2 will air in 2025. I’m also seeing lots of Frieren stuff on Twitter.

  6. If you go anywhere that have deer, you would know pretty rapidly… Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan! Sheer absurd humour with a delightfully brain rot tune to go with it. (you have been warned) Whether it is sheer genius or terrible thats up to you. Thing like Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Oshi No Ko and Re:Zero season three is starting soon, so expect a lot of new Rem and Ram everywhere (not that either stopped being simply everywhere).

  7. Lots of My Hero Academia stuff around too because of the new movie. Pretty much everywhere in ikkebukuro and the arcades.

  8. I think it’s usually anime movies that have the most tie-ins and collabs that you will find at stores and restaurants. I went in April and I went to a Frieren event, and a pop up cafe for an older anime. While all around Tokyo there were a lot of ads and collabs for the Detective Conan movie, at so many restaurants there were special menu items and things to collect. I would guess the My Hero Academia movie is the big thing now but it came out early August. Maybe they’ll start promoting a different big release by September.
