$5K USD, solo traveller, first timer — what do you recommend?

Hey everyone!

I’m a 20M from Chicago. After lots of saving, I now have about $5K to put towards a trip to Japan. I wasn’t sure how much to bring, so I figured $5K would be good enough. I’ve only travelled on car trips around the Midwest with my parents years ago and, recently, flights to Orlando with my best friend. I’ve never travelled internationally before, so this is all very new to me.

I’m looking to do a 15 day vacation, from January 6th to the 21st. I’d take a flight from Chicago to Montreal, for a two hour layover, then from Montreal to Narita via Air Canada.

I’m still working out an itinerary for the trip, but I definitely plan to check out Akihabara, Tokyo Tower, and some other things. The Metropolitan Police Museum and the Nissan Heritage Collection caught my eyes as well. If it’s not unrealistic, I’d definitely want to try to hit Nagoya and Osaka, then loop back. Again, still working out an itinerary.

Anything you guys would recommend for a first timer like me? And would $5K be more than enough? I’m typically not a huge fan of crazy expensive stuff, and I don’t think I’d splurge too crazy.
