Got a job offer, what questions should I be asking about working in Japan in general?

Hello friends! I made it through a grueling three interviews, fourth being a casual meetup with the execs, more as a formality after they’d already decided they wanted to hire me. I have a one month remote part-time trial period while I’m still in the U.S. as a method of figuring out which team my skill set fits into/which team I vibe with most. After a month, if both me and the company are still vibing well, we begin the process of moving me to Japan for the full time gig.

In the meantime between now and the part-time contract being drafted, I’ve been asked what questions I have about working in Japan. I’ve already asked the boilerplate “work culture, finding a place to live, visa process, etc.” questions but I feel like there is a lot I’m not thinking of…does anyone have things they would want to ask/wish they asked before they moved? I’m stumped but I do want to get all the possible info I can.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Why not ask them about things that are relevant to you rather than life in Japan in general?

Are you moving with your family? If so, are they school age or do they need a day care? Do you need your company to accommodate you in some way? There may be colleagues who were in the same situation as you.

  2. All of these things can be answered by Googling and reading this sub. You should be asking them about EMPLOYER specific things, like negotiating housing subsidies or a moving expense. They’re not there to hold your hand about general life stuff.
