Excuse my ignorance, I genuinely want to know.

I am in the US but work with several people who live in Japan. I want to address them correctly. Is it always disrespectful to address them by their first name no matter the circumstances? Should I address them by their last name -san in emails and in zoom meetings?

It seems a google search has conflicting answers. I appreciate the response.

  1. I would go with their family name + San. Unless you have a very close, friendly relationship with them. In that case you could probably address them by their given name, but still keep the San suffix out of respect.

You might be able to get away with kun, but I wouldn’t try it unless you’re speaking to them outside of work.
