House moving tips

Hi friends from community, I will move to another city soon. Is it common that people get rid of their furnitures and fridge/wash machine etc to save the moving cost? I wonder what’s the difference it will make? Any budget house moving service recommendations?
Thanks!!! 🫶🏼

  1. You should ask for a quote of moving companies with and without the stuff that you’re thinking about selling to see if it’s worth it.

If you sell your stuff you will most likely get a small fraction of the original cost, let’s say 30%.

But, maybe your old stuff doesn’t fit the new place anyway, have you checked that? For example the fridge or washing machine are too big or open on the wrong side, etc.

  2. Moving companies will try to charge twice the price or more at the first quote. You’ll save many yen by getting quotes from multiple companies and playing them off against each other. One guy posted here that he “accidentally” got a few companies to come to his place at the same time and they battled it out.

  3. Moving companies generally will charge you based on distance, number of movers, and truck size. Depending on the amount of stuff you have, dropping stuff might not impact moving cost much, if at all.

Oppositely, you’ll have to rebuy that stuff on the other end. It feels like you’ll make out ahead by keeping your stuff.

  4. Take a look at small moving packages for people who don’t have many belongings that companies like Kuroneko and Nittsu offer. If you can fit your things into one of those by getting rid of something you have, and the saving is more than the cost of buying it again, why not?

If you need a regular moving service, you can make it cheaper by booking a few months in advance outside of the busy season and choosing a plan that arrives in the afternoon on a weekday.

  5. If your stuff is third-hand Hard-Off whatevers *and you’re wanting to buy some new stuff* I say get rid of it before the move. But if it’s still newish and in good condition go ahead and bring it with you. Unless you’ve got mountains of stuff the overall cost won’t be much different minus one washing machine or a sofa.

Like the other person said, be mindful that your sofa/washing machine/fridge may not fit in the new place. Have you checked the measurements? What about your gas range? Is it the same type of gas in the new place (natural gas or propane)?

I do recommend you start packing way sooner than you think you need too. And to go through all your stuff and chuck anything you don’t want/need. Haven’t worn that jacket in three years? Toss it. That ramen bowl have a chip in it? Out it goes.

  6. I’ve moved with my husband twice, once we had the moving company pack our shit and the other we packed ourselves. If I were to move again I would pack myself. When we had them pack it when we got to our new place we couldn’t find anything we needed and they packed stuff dumb, like we found one box with one pan in it and there was plenty of room to pack more in the box. When we moved again and packed ourselves I wrote EVERYTHING I put in it on the outside of the box. Tldr; I recommend packing your own shit if you can
