Sony Bank ATM’s woes.

Has anyone have had issues with their Sony Bank visa debit cards while specifically trying to use ATMs withdrawals(All other types of transactions are fine). I have a recurring issue in which I follow all the requirements for how and were to use the card on partners ATM(711, MUFG, etc) and after a few uses the card is returned back by the ATM with out any valid/apparent reason.

I’m going through my second or third card within a few months and can’t be just getting a new card every time this issue occurs. I’m at the point I’m thinking of trying to switch to a different bank but the options for English speakers are limited.

  1. atm function is on a different magnetic stripe from the debit card part. are you perhaps keeping your wallet somewhere magnetic that could be erasing the (apparently less resilient) atm stripe while not affecting the debit part? i had same issue wtf smbc issued prepaid card where it would no longer be chargeable at 7/11 atm because i trashed the second strip, but worked fine as a prepaid cc.

  2. Have you tried putting in your card with the metallic chip facing BACKWARDS – because that’s how Sony Bank cards work.

To make it clearer, the gold chip on the card is pointing toward you, and not the ATM.

Because I had the exact same issue, googled it, and found that out.

Go and try it and good luck.

Added: it’s also in the literature that Sony bank mail you when you first open the account.

  3. At what time are you withdrawing? There’s certain times you can’t withdraw (E.g. sunday at like 11pm)
