My friend (an Asian who went for an interview two days ago) was quite shocked and depressed when the head of the HR department of a Japanese company scolded her and accused her of being a job-hopper. Yes, she does change jobs, but at least it’s about once a year per company. She can speak three languages: Japanese, Chinese, and English. We had warned her about Japanese work culture, but it seems this time she was taken aback by their attitude. Usually, companies will avoid directly telling someone they aren’t hired, instead sending a rejection email, but this time the HR head outright called her a job-hopper.
Perhaps the concept of someone working at a single company for their entire life in Japan still needs a lot of adjustment. Older generations have a very limited view of job-hopping.
And you know what’s funny? The job she applied for only paid 220,000 yen with 45 hours of overtime included. They hired another girl, who seemed quite proud, but she only lasted a week before quitting. Now they’re scrambling to find a replacement, but with the demand to speak three languages and that kind of salary, good luck to them.
