Car Insurance

Hi everyone.

I’m due to go to Japan soon for a 2 week trip to visit family. Recently married, who’s spouse lives in Japan (Long term resident, not a permanent resident). I was hoping for some advice R.e. car insurance. I am from the UK so can get an International Driving Permit for Japan. My spouse’s brother has a car I can use. What kind of insurance is required for me to drive his car. Is there a temporary car insurance means of getting insured on his car. I am 26 yo btw. Would highly appreciate some advice! Thanks in advance!

  1. You can drive on on international driving permit in Japan if you’re a visitor but not if you have a residency card, which I assume you don’t. I doubt you can get car insurance without a Japanese drivers license unless it’s a rental car that includes insurance. Your spouse’s brother should check to see if his insurance covers you if you drive his car.
