How do Hentaigana look to a non-Japanese speaker?

I am Japanese. Hentaiganas are like a parallel world of hiragana or broken to me.
I wonder if people for whom Japanese is not their first language feel uncomfortable about hentaigana. Also, can you immediately recognize (intuitively, not from knowledge) that they are not hiragana?
