15 days in Nagano, Gifu, Aichi, and Miyagi

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip to Japan from November 3rd to December 13th and would love some advice on my itinerary. This is my second visit to Japan. On my first trip, I solo traveled for three months, starting in April. During that trip, I focused on some of the more famous cities:

  1. Tokyo
  2. Kanazawa
  3. Kyoto
  4. Osaka
  5. Hiroshima
  6. Hakata
  7. Hakodate
  8. Sapporo

Each of these places was amazing, but this time, I want to dig a bit deeper into Japan's lesser-known areas. Last time, I hit up all the famous spots, which I loved. But now, I want to explore more and get to know some of the lesser-known cities and towns.

My Plan:

I’ll be traveling for 40 days total, with 25 days dedicated to Tokyo (I’m quite familiar with the city and fell in love with its vibe). For the remaining 15 days, I want to explore Japan’s rural charm while still experiencing the energy of larger cities. My focus will be on Nagano, Gifu, Aichi, and Miyagi prefectures. I’d really appreciate your thoughts on this itinerary.

November 2024 Itinerary:

Day 1-4: Nagano Prefecture
Day 1: I’ll land in the afternoon and take the Shinkansen to Nagano. After checking in, I’ll grab dinner and explore the city at night.
Day 2: – Visit Zenko-ji Temple ,Gondo shopping street.
– Togakushi Shrine, Ninja Trick Mansion, and Kagami-ike pond.
Day 3:Matsumoto day trip
– Matsumoto Castle, the Ukiyo-e Museum, Nakamachi Street.
Day 4: I’m thinking of a day trip to the Kiso Valley.
Head back to Nagano for a last goodbye.

Day 5-7: Takayama (Gifu Prefecture)
Day 5: Take a morning train from Nagano to Takayama.
– Takayama Old Town and the morning markets.
Day 6: Takayama Jinya and Hida Folk Village.
– I’ve already been to Shirakawa-Go but might consider visiting again.
Day 7: Day trip to Gero Onsen.

Day 8-11: Nagoya (Aichi Prefecture)
Day 8: Take the Shinkansen to Nagoya in the morning.
– Visit Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Shrine, and Osu District.
Day 9: Day trip to Inuyama.
– Visit Inuyama Castle, Meiji Mura, and Jokamachi.
Day 10: Explore Nagoya.
– Visit the Nagoya City Art Museum, Shirotori Garden, Sakae
Day 11: Another day trip.
– Considering visiting Toyota City to see the Toyota Museum, or maybe have a chill day exploring Nagoya

Day 12-15: Sendai (Miyagi Prefecture)
Day 12: Spend the day in Sendai.
– Visit Sendai Castle Ruins, Zuihoden Mausoleum,
Day 13: Day trip to Matsushima Bay.
– Take a boat tour around the bay, visit Zuigan-ji Temple
Day 14: Day trip to Yamadera.
– Hike up to Risshaku-ji Temple and
Day 15: Explore Sendai’s markets, shops

After this, I’ll be heading to Tokyo for the rest of my trip

Now for the Questions:

  1. I'm particularly interested in using big cities as bases for exploring rural areas and villages. Are there better city options in other prefectures for this kind of trip?
  2. I’m aiming to experience a mix of urban and rural, vibrant city life, and peaceful nature. Do you think these prefectures offer the best combination for this experience?
  3. Does this itinerary look doable and balanced? Are there any must-see spots or cities that I should swap out for something better?
  4. Any recommendations for Ukiyo-e and traditional Japanese art museums or galleries in these areas?
  5. I on one hand love to take my time, and on the other hand want to see as much as possible. Please inform me if you think I’m wasting too many days in each prefecture!

Any insights would be really appreciated!
Thank you ~~
