Does your degree need to relate to your career for HSP points?

Hi folks,

Some quick questions I’m finding it hard to get answers to:

– Do your degrees need to relate to your career? E.g if I’m working as a software engineer, do I still get 30 points for my basket weaving PhD?
– You get 10 points for graduating from a top-300 university – does this have to be for a degree relating to your career? E.g. I got my basket weaving PhD from Harvard, and a computer science bachelor’s from Smalltown University – do I get the 10 points?

And am I correct in assuming that you can apply for PR based on HSP points even if you’re on a non-HSP work visa?

  1. I’m not 100% certain about the degrees, so I’ll refrain from commenting on that particular part.

Yes, you can use your HSFP points eligibility to take advantage of the accelerate PR process. With a caveat: You must have qualified for those points *for the entire residency period*. So if you want to use the 70pt/3yr PR track, you have to qualify for the 70 points for the whole 3 years. You can’t move to Japan, take language courses to get the last few points and then apply.

  2. I don’t think it does, when I was applying for my HSP visa I asked the lawyers which diploma they needed. They said either one would be fine, including the equivalent of my basket weaving phd. So that makes me think it doesn’t have to relate to your profession.
