I found someone that want to sell his toyota Noah for 31万. Because it’s literally my first time buying a car, I want to know whether it’s a good deal or not. Because the time for shaken renewal is near and it’s not from a dealer.
Detail of the car is :
Year 2010
Shaken 2022-11
Miles 14.5万

Hold on give me a minute checking the condition of the car. 🫳🏻🔮
The easiest way to get a sense for the price is [carsensor.net](https://carsensor.net). You can put in 2010 Noah with that approximate mileage and you’ll see basically all of them for sale in Japan.
Kinda sucks with the shaken coming up though. That’s a harder one to do the math on. For all you know it could need a new set of tires or whatever. But if it has a year of shaken left you’re not likely to face any immediate expenses.
If it’s well maintained/in good condition that’s a decent but not great deal (because of the shaken situation and the maps are painfully out of date if it’s got the stock navi). I would suggest paying about 2万 and taking it in for the pre-shaken inspection before purchasing it since you’ll be able to shaken it in October (make sure it’s only 1 month before your shaken is due). This could save you a TON of surprises. Our Voxy has about 18万 km and runs like the day we bought it, but, we don’t drive it hard and I do all the maintanance on it.
If you can do the shaken yourself though you’ll save at least 15万. It’s easy enough to do and you can print almost all the forms out and pre-fill them out (I actually have them saved in pdf form on my computer for the bike/car). There are all sorts of youtube guides/webpages covering this but it’ll take a day out of your schedule to do it. You buy jibaiseki at a shop across the street from the shakenjo – price government mandated so it doesn’t matter where you purchase it it will cost the same amount. Before you drive it away purchase 3rd party insurance. **DO NOT DRIVE WITHOUT 3RD PARTY INSURANCE – ALWAYS GET THE LAWYER OPTION – JOIN JAF.**
Alternatively if you take it to the dealer and it’s in good shape expect a quote of about 30万. Take their quote. There will be 2 sections, required to pass shaken and suggested. In suggested they’ll have things like clean the headlights replace the cabin filters, change the washer fluid, change the wiper blades, etc.. The last time we brought it in for the pre-shaken I literally changed the wiper blades, put in fluid before we took it, and I’d changed the battery out about 6 months prior, the wiper blade and fluid packages were sitting in the cabin, guess what was on the “suggested maintanance”? Yeah – that’s the scam, most people just pay whatever they tell them to pay as they must be suggesting something the car needs right? Tell them you don’t want any of that you want just enough to pass Shaken. That will drop it down to the 20万 level.
The shaken for a 2010 Noah is likely to be expensive and if the car needs tires, brake repairs, or other maintenence to pass it will be even more so. Buying a used car from an individual rather than a dealer is complicated. You’ll have to take care of all of the paperwork yourself, like registration with the tax office and the registration of your parking space with your city office, etc. The price for the car is cheap but it could become an expensive hassle for a car that old.
