Inflation at the supermarket

I went to buy a chicken breast for dinner over the weekend and they were between 400-500 yen per breast! Is anyone else noticing massive price hikes?

  1. What was the price per 100g? Per unit for most meat makes no sense as the weight per unit varies a lot.

  2. Yes, it’s been on the news for quite a while and I’m pretty sure people who do their own shopping have noticed.

I used to get 38 yen per 100g but these days it’s 48 yen is the cheapest.

  3. 3/4 of the animal feed comes from North and South America and Yen got weaker. Inflation and weak Yen.

  4. I’m not up to the point in my life where I know how much Y per G of chicken I spent… I’m amazed at other peoples insight.

I usually buy at Maruetsu and it’s around 200/300 yen for a nice momo

  5. There have been some price hikes, particularly onions earlier in the summer (which seem to have come back down again), but nothing like what you’re describing.

My local supermarket has chicken breast for 68 yen/100g, 48 yen/100g on sale (domestic chicken). Thigh meat is usually either 108 or 98 yen/100g for domestic, or like 70 yen or so per 100g if you buy Brazilian chicken in 1kg packs.

  6. I’ve noticed inflation kicking in for some food items. Some of the restaurants I frequent have raised prices considerably. My favorite curry place raised prices on their set meals by 200 yen in just 6 months. I’ve started cooking more, but the price of groceries have increased, and my salary has not.
