Pls: what the hell is this massive spider?

Found in the bathroom. Do I need to put a blowtorch to my house?

  1. # Can A Huntsman Spider Bite?

Huntsmen *can* and will bite, if provoked. They don’t generally look for trouble with humans (they prefer to hide), but when threatened or when protecting their young, they can go on the offensive.

Generally, a huntsman who’s feeling threatened or cornered will make a threat display – rearing up and waving their front legs in the air. This is spider-language for “Come at me, bro!”, and means the huntsman is ready for a fight. If you see a huntsman doing this, you probably want to back off and give him some space – because his next move might well be to charge towards you and bite. Huntsmen move a lot quicker than you might expect. And remember, they can jump!

If threatened while it’s clinging to a wall or on the roof, you might see it suddenly draw its legs in towards its body. This is also a good time to back off, as this can signal that it’s about to jump.

Huntsmen are also very protective of their young and will often become aggressive if protecting an egg-sack or recently-hatched young. If you see what you think might be a pregnant huntsman spider (which have greatly enlarged abdomens and may have already created an egg sack nearby), you might want to keep your distance. Of course, that might also be when you decide you want the spider evicted – given Huntsmen females can lay up to 200 young in a single egg sack.

  2. Huntsman spider. Ashidaka gumo in japanese. They are friends and eat cockroaches! If you can catch and release outside you will be well protected

  3. It’s a huntsman. They’re harmless, other than the ones that kill you in your sleep.

  4. An absolutely gorgeous huntsman spider. They’re considered good luck if one chooses to live in your home.

  5. I think a type of huntsman. Bad luck to kill it (here in western Japan anyway). It is not dangerous to you. The last time I had one, I just opened a window in the bathroom and she left.

  6. Yeah im pretty sure its a huntsman. They’re freaky, but pretty good – they eat cockroaches. Depends, which is worse

  7. It won’t hurt you but why are the spiders so large they should have a HP meter underneath them.

  8. How come you guys keep getting these spiders and my place in Kyoto literally got nothing, no bugs, nothing. I used to live second floor.

  9. I opened reddit to THIS JUMPSCARE. I almost dropped my phone lmao. I beg you please set a spoilers/NSFW thing or something please 😭

  10. I killed one once… felt bad. Then a couple years later I opened a cabinet and saw one munching on a cockroach. Then I felt worse. They’re natural pest control.

  11. Aw, I’d love to have one of these decide to stay in my house. I’ve had a few smallish ones come in the front door and run around the walls for a while, but they always disappear after a day or so.

  12. Most people say to let it roam as if anyone would actually be able to sleep knowing that thing is in your house.

Also I’m a total baby back bitch when it comes to giant bugs – so there’s that. I’d probably try and vacuum him up then throw away the vacuum and buy a new one

  13. We had. 12 year old girl at camp in Okutama pick one up in her hands and carry it outside a room. She said it was ‘fuwa fuwa”

  14. Like everyone else said Huntsman spider. In Japanese it’s called アシダカグモ (ashidakagumo, tall legged spider). I shit myself the first time I saw one and spent the better part of an hour trying to kill it. These things are FAST because they don’t hunt with webs, they chase down their prey. But here’s the thing: they prey on cockroaches and centipedes and don’t really bother humans. I learned to love my spider friends. I’d rather have this guy on my wall than get bitten by a venomous centipede that found its way into my bedding (this also happened. Fuck Mukade.)

  15. Thanks for this Reddit and comments I’ll never be visiting Kyoto or Japan for that matter now.
