I’m going to Japan for 3 weeks in April/may next year and I’ve found there’s so much to do. Please read my previous post https://www.reddit.com/r/JapanTravel/s/XIeXYf5MRC for context but I have replanned into something that cuts a lot of unnecessary sights. Thing is, I have 3 weeks and the itinerary I planned still only gets from Osaka to Mount Fuji before running out of days, while I see people doing Tokyo Kyoto Osaka in 2 weeks or less. Is there something I’m missing? Are they really only doing the “best of the best” skipping over sights that are great but aren’t “the best of the best”. I’m happy with this itinerary and can do Tokyo on a separate trip (I’m from Australia and lots of cheap flights) but looking to get a perspective on how people do more with less time. General advise on the itinerary would be appreciated as well. Thanks.
11th April: land in Osaka and get train to city centre. (4 nights)
12th universal studios
13th Osaka castle, Osaka aquarium, tempozan Ferris wheel abeno harukas umeda sky building and dotonbori.
14th Osaka expo
15th train to koyasan, temples (1 night)
16th yoshino, stay in kashihara (1 night)
17th omiwa jinja shrine, hasedera temple, train to Nara, parts of nara park. (1 night)
18th Finish Nara park, heijō palace, yakushi-ji temple and horyu-ji temple, train to kyoto (1 week)
19th Kyoto railway museum, tōji temple, Kyoto tower, higashi hongan-ji temple, samurai museum and tea ceremony.
20th, fushimi inari taisha shrine, Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine, Nintendo museum and byodo-in temple
21st arashiyama bamboo forest, monkey park, various temples, sagano tram and hozugawa river boat.
22nd higashiyama/philosophers path shrines and temples
23rd Sanzen-in temple, mount hiei and biwako valley
24th nijō castle, kitano-temmangū shrine, kinkaku-ji temple, kifune shrine and kuramadera temple.
25th otsu day trip, cruise, miho museum Lake Biwa museum, hachiman-bori and hikone castle, train to Nagoya (3 nights)
26th Railway park, port of Nagoya aquarium, atsuta-jingu shrine, science museum mirai tower and Nagoya castle
27th Ghibli park
28th ise-shima day trip then ferry bus and train to Hamamatsu (2 nights)
29th oigawa railway and onsens
30th hamanako, ryugaiwa cave and airpark museum and nihondaira, stay in Fuji city (1 night)
1st May shiraito falls, Saiko Iyashi-no-Sato Nenba, lake kawaguchi and mt Fuji ropeway, stay in fujiyoshima (1 night)
2nd arakurayama sengen, oshino hakkai, lake yamanaka and hakone glass museum. (2 nights)
3rd hakone open air museum, Mishima sky walk, owakudani, hakone shrine and lake ashi cruise
4th train back to Kansai airport for 9:45pm flight via Toyota museum Nagoya.
