I was hired at a big Japanese company out of college but I don’t feel like the role that they put me in really fits with my major or career goals so I’ve been looking to change jobs after being there 4 years. (I get the feeling they just see everybody as 理系 or 文系 and have no idea how they decided the departments).
Right now I’ve got the option to take a position at a smaller company that’s more within my field, so I figured if nothing else I should just take it for the experience, but when I asked some Japanese people they said it’s a bad idea. They say I shouldn’t risk changing jobs unless I absolutely hate my current one or it’s a huge salary increase because most Japanese companies look down that and if I don’t like it I might get stuck there, plus I’ll always be beneath the people who got hired out of college regardless of my skills or performance and will have a hard time trying to raise my salary.
Is that true in other people’s experience?
