I recently had a health scare that got me thinking about how I should write up a will including who I want to be the legal guardian for my minor child in the event that my husband and I both pass at the same time.
I am an American citizen but for bureaucracy reasons I am not currently able to get my daughter a US passport. Her father is Japanese, and we all live in Japan.
However, we do not have any family who would be suitable to become my daughter’s legal guardian in Japan. She has a grandfather here, but I have no doubt he could be downright dangerous to her, and my husband agrees.
So we are trying to figure out what we can do, if anything, to name my parents and other family members in the US as our desired legal guardians for my daughter in the event that my husband and I both pass.
I am having trouble finding information on this online, and am thinking I will need to consult a lawyer who specializes in US/Japanese family law.
I was wondering if anyone has had the experience of naming legal guardians who live outside of Japan for their children, and if there are any recommended resources to help us in our search.
Thanks in advance for any insight!
