Converting western room to tatami room – Tenants

Hello everyone!

Our kids are sleeping on futons and we’re looking to convert their western style room to a tatami room. We’re renting the house right now so we’re not sure how to go about it. We saw some off the shelf unit that you can attach together from different vendors but we’re wondering how well it ventilates compared to a proper tatami installation. On the other end since we’re renting we’re not sure if we can have a proper tatami setup (with chim/raisers underneath to air properly)

Any insights or experience on this topic is welcome!

Wish you all a wonderful Autumn!

  1. Why would you want to do that? The trend in Japan with people who live in older houses is to convert tatami rooms into hardwood floors.

  2. I would sooner look for a solution to put between the futon and the hard floor. I cannot imagine your rental agreement would be okay with the renovation work required to convert it.

  3. You’d have to tear up all the floorboards and buy a whole new set of tatami. As others have mentioned, the trend for at least the past 20 years has been to switch tatami to hardwood (or cheap shitty pressed wood panels) so your landlord is 99% not gonna want to do it or allow it.

My advice is to buy bedframes. They even sell versions with tatami set inside.

  4. Just buy some tatami floor mats (put on top of hard wood). To convert you would have to spend a couple thousand dollars and get many permissions.
