I can't seem to book from Sapporo to Tokyo by train. It keeps saying there are no routes available. I know/am doing the following :
1: booking one month out (not more than 30 days)
2: trying to book through the jr east website direct
3: aware that there are no direct trains and there's a change in shin Hakodate. I've tried searching Sapporo to Tokyo and breaking it down Sapporo to Hakodate and then Hakodate to Tokyo with no luck. I keep getting the message "there are no routes that meet the requirements"
4: aware that flying is faster but we a) want to see japan from the train and b) using the train as a bit of a rest day to nap and recuperate and just chill
Does anyone have any advice on how to book? Am I just using the wrong site?
Thanks!

I have no problem trying to book on JR East Train Reservation right now, both Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Tokyo and Sapporo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto.
Are you trying to book the “bullet” train” for this route? There’s no bullet train all the way to Sapporo. It goes to Shin Hakodate (only). You can take the Hokuto from Shin-Hakodate to Sapporo (or vice versa, in your case).
You shouldn’t face issues to buy tickets – but you can’t buy “Shinkansen” tickets for this rout because it doesn’t exist.
You have to book each train ride separately. Shinkansen to north of Honshu. Then the train for Hokkaido.
Shinkansen stops at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto as it is it’s northern end station. You need to book another train type between Hakodate and Sapporo in a separate booking.
Why do you want to spend 8 hours on trains? You like them that much?
