Tandem is a language exchange app. I study Korean and Japanese, so I use it to find fluent/native speakers and talk to them and share culture and language critique/help.
I found someone from Naha, who claims that he wants to learn English because he didn't get to go to high school. I realize high school isn't compulsory, but the reason he gave me is that where he is from, if you aren't good enough you don't get to go to high school and you are forced to become a fisherman. That seems somewhat believable on a very traditional island like Okinawa where fishing is so important.
But he also says that he isn't allowed to wear clothes, only fundoshi. He only has pictures in fundoshi or a miwashi(he likes sumo wrestling). He says that this is because his parents force him to.
I can't find any info about either of these being traditions in Okinawa.
Does anyone know if this is something that happens in poorer families maybe? Or is this some dude's kink and I should find a different language partner?
