Had guy stop me on crosswalk to ask something about my apartment

Basically this morning I went across the street and put my trash where everyone else does but is that normal for it to be across the street? I think he was asking if I lived there but I know he saw me cross and do it so I’m just worried I’m putting it in the wrong place
