Hello I am going to Kyushu and planning to travel from Kagoshima (I don't think I'll stop here I'm just on my way back from Yakushima) to Kumamoto & then to Yufuin. I was wondering if you had any recommendations for old towns to visit, places to see. Since I won't have a car I'm trying to be smart about the places I visit, so probably things in the central area of Kyushu will be easier to reach!
I would like to stay mostly in traditional town architecturally, or nature places. I'm a visual artist so anything that is very particular and unique is highly welcomed.
I think I'll be using Yufuin as a base for part of the time (4 days), to visit Beppu & Kurokawa, while maybe i'd like to stay somewhere near kumamoto (i wasn't too inspired by the modern city look of kumamoto itself) to travel some other places, would be nice to know what place could make sense as a second traveling base, it doesn't need to be kumamoto I could travel directly from Kagoshima to Yufuin, and then head to another spot. I'll be staying a total of 8-9 days, in this area of Japan, altho I could stay longer if it makes sense, then I'll be flying back to Osaka!
