Hey ya’ll, I’m new here. A long time learner with middling skillset, I think it’s time for me to dive into the two biggest hotspots of culture for me. Food and hot springs make up the biggest hunk of fascination, and I’d like to submit a request for helpful, interesting, or uncommon words and phrases to truly expand my knowledge in these fields. Since the question is sorta complex and open ended, I figured it warranted an individual post… Sorry if it’s too simple for that!
As an example, “Sa-Shi-Su-Se-So” (Satoh, Shio, Su, Shoyu, Miso) as a guide for Japanese flavors in regards to cooking.
(Also, Japanese macaques. I will bathe with you one day, you chill little monkey bros. Wait for me!)

Thermae Romae Novae might be what you’re looking for. It’s an anime about a Roman baths architect who gets transported to the future in Japan and learns all about onsen culture. Each episode focuses on a different aspect. And at the end of each episode you see a little five minute story of the author of the anime going to visit different onsens as she does research for the show. I’m sure you could pick up plenty of vocabulary just by watching. AND get ideas of places to visit!
