15 day itinerary check – Tokyo, Hiroshima, Koyosan, Osaka, Kyoto

My wife and I are headed to Japan in about 3 weeks. Can anyone please give advice on our itinerary? This is a dream trip for us and we want to see what we can without overdoing it and burning ourselves out 🙂

Flight: 13 hours to Haneda in Delta Economy from Minneapolis St. Paul

Total Budget: $8,000 – $8,500

Remaining Budget: $3,000 – $,3500 (all hotels, flights, and some tours have been paid for, do you think this is enough to pay for food, trains, souveniers, etc)

Overview:

  • 1 night over the western seaboard and Pacific ocean
  • 4 nights in Tokyo
  • 2 nights in Hiroshima (day trip to Miyajima)
  • 1 night in Koyosan
  • 2 nights in Osaka
  • 4 nights in Kyoto (day trip to Nara)
  • 1 night over the Pacific Ocean

DAY 1: SATURDAY

  • Approx. 8 a.m. CST arrive at MSP via connecting flight
  • Approx. 11 a.m. CST depart MSP to Haneda

DAY 2: SUNDAY

  • Approx. 2 p.m. GMT arrive at Haneda Airport
    • Pick up baggage
    • Purchase WIFI and Suica cards
    • Tokyo Monorail/subway to hotel in Akihabara
    • Walk in Akihabara and Asakusa area, dinner in this area
    • We are open to suggestions for this afternoon. We will of course be tired.
    • Try to stay awake until 10 p.m. 🙂

DAY 3: MONDAY

  • Tokyo DisneySea
  • Optional: Tokyo Tower in the evening

DAY 4: TUESDAY

  • Tokyo Imperial Palace (tour has been booked through Imperial Household Agency)
  • Asakusa
    • Senso-Ji
    • Asakusa Shrine
    • Shopping/food in Asakusa
  • Tokyo Skytree at night

DAY 5: WEDNESDAY

  • Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
  • Meiju Jingu
  • mipig Cafe
  • Shibuya
  • Omoide Yokocho

DAY 6: THURSDAY

  • Approx. 8 a.m. Shinkansen to Hiroshima, arrive at approx. noon
  • Drop bags at luggage storage/hotel near bomb dome
  • Peace Memorial Museum, Park and bomb dome
  • Okonomiyaki dinner (open to suggestions)

DAY 7: FRIDAY

  • Day trip to Miyajima via JR Ferry at Miyajimaguchi
  • Miyajima Omotesando Shopping Street
  • Hokokujinja Senjokaku Pavillion
  • Itsukushima Jinja
  • Daishoin
  • Shishiiwa Observatory via ropeway

DAY 8: SATURDAY

  • Train/bus to Koyosan
  • Kongobu-Ji
  • Okunoin Cemetery
  • Hoon-In (buddhist temple overnight)

DAY 9: SUNDAY

  • Bus/train to Osaka
  • Osaka Castle Park
  • Dotonbori
  • Namba Yasaka Jinja

  • Osaka Aquarium Kaiyakan
  • Shinsaibashi PARCO
  • Denden Town

  • Train from Osaka to Kyoto
  • Drop luggage @ storage near Kyoto Station
  • Kyoto Railway Museum

DAY 12: WEDNESDAY
