Hello,
I am an Australian who has been offered a job at a ski resort in Hakuba over the winter season this year. I would love to have the experience of living in Japan for a few months and am looking forward to experiencing a new environment as I have lived in Australia my whole life.
However, I have heard Hakuba is not as easy for lower level Japanese speakers such as myself in comparison to places like Niseko and other popular tourist resorts in Hokkaido. Due to my limited knowledge (which I am actively trying to improve), I am considered to have higher deductions out of my pay for dormitory fees in comparison to 'regular' staff. Combined daily fees are ¥ 1450 yen/day, taken out of my pay rate of ¥ 1000 yen an hour. The 'normal' rate is ¥ 1000 yen/day for dorm and meal fees. I am not expecting much in terms of pay, as I have little Japanese knowledge and do not offer much to these resorts outside of my previous restaurant experience, however does this sound unusually high or is this quite normal?
In no way am I expecting to make any significant money in Japan, and I am simply travelling for the experience. I will be working 8 hour days, so ¥ 8000 yen/day, which I am fine with. I just wanted to know what you guys think? Is ¥ 1450 a day for dormitory fees for full time workers too much? If so am I better off looking for other opportunities at other resorts? Or is this the normal salary for somebody who does not speak much Japanese.
Any advice would be sooo appreciated!! I am not very informed when it comes to travel overseas as I have never been outside of Australia. I have only recently become an adult and therefore have not had the freedom to travel where I like for very long. Also if questions like these are asked too often, I am sorry. I have tried to do my own research but a topic like this is sorta ambiguous, as every situation is different.
Thanks in advance.
