た and だ

While studying Japanese basics, I faced with difficulty. When we want to say something in the past, we add だ to verb, for example, 犬が食べだ- Dog ate. But i saw sentences, where verb ends with た and it also showes action in the past, for example, 少女が歌った – Girl sang. So what the difference between た and だ? Or maybe I misunderstood something? Could you please help me?
