In my case, the verbose monologues and expositions in battle shōnen are the types of speech that are humbling me at the moment. I can deal with slice-of-life romances and comedies just fine, but I recently started rewatching the original Shaman King (might be the first time in Japanese; I've seen it before in Tagalog and English), and I'm not used to fantasy battle shōnen speak anymore. I used to watch them all the time before starting to learn Japanese 10 years ago, but damn. The stiff expressions are messing with me. For the most part, the stiffest expressions I encounter outside of battle shōnen anime are in news broadcasts, and those usually aren't a problem on the condition that I don't lack too much vocabulary in the topic at hand. It's not even the case that I watch a lot of news to keep myself accustomed to it either. At least they verbally explain the made-up fantasy terms in Shaman King , so that hasn't been a problem.
From what I read online, people's confusion typically goes in the opposite direction. Many people learn Japanese to watch anime, so watching a ton of anime becomes part of their learning routine when their skills are high enough to keep up, and they predictably get comfortable with the language in the stuff they watch. But then they switch to YouTube and j-dramas or movies, and they find their understanding lacking because they haven't listened to enough unexaggerated, relaxed, natural, full-speed speech.
What are your experiences with stuff like this?
