Selling a product from a website in Japan?

Hi everyone. Hope you are all having a good time.

I want to know if I need to do something before creating a product and selling it online.

I am a software developer but as a hobby I grow vegetables mostly basil, in my little garden. I make good pesto sauce. Everyone who tasted it said they loved it. So I was thinking of creating a small brand and selling my handmade pesto sauce jars on a website.

I was wondering what kind of permissions do I need(if any) to sell my product? Do I need to register it? Can I just sell it as it is or do I need to apply somewhere to get it tested etc?

Thank you!

  1. We have a small business selling chili peppers. If you call the 保健所 (hokenjo), they will ask for your processing methods and tell you what requirements need to be fulfilled. Basically though, any sort of processing will likely need a dedicated kitchen that is not your home kitchen. So I think selling fresh basil will be easy for you, but making and jarring pesto might be a bit more complicated.
