Tried to search a bit but I couldn’t find discussion on this on reddit, so I started this post.
Lately I am considering upgrading to a larger-sensor camera, and I am looking at those from Sony. I realized that they provide an extended warranty service “**長期保証<ワイド>”** which by paying an extra 10% of the camera price, I can upgrade to a 5-year warranty covering accidental damage for the camera.
(I am aware that the official site is selling at a higher price, so let’s say it’s more like 20%)
Typically I do not trust these services when they are provided by a third party, but coming from Sony itself sounds pretty promising, and adding 10 – 20% to buy from Sony directly in exchange of a peace of mind is acceptable to me.
Before jumping on it, I wonder how others’ experiences were like with this warranty. Did it really help you with fixing your camera in your case of accidental damage? I will be glad to hear from you.

I believe It’s a forced purchase from the big stores and actually included in the shown price
Not for camera, but I bought the wide warranty for my headphones which developed a problem and they repaired it with no fuss at all.
I bought the Wide with my camera, if you’re a member of Sony’s site, there’s a ton of discounts and coupons you can claim, so it was basically free to add the 5 year Wide. My camera from the Sony Store directly ended up being cheaper than buying it from any other store, plus I got 5 years of coverage.
I haven’t used it yet, but it comes with benefits like being able to rent crazy expensive lenses for cheap.
Edit: just went through my coupons, there’s a 10% off and a 5000 yen off coupon, and depending on the type of coupon and model, they stack.
Edit2: camera was listed at 142,000, I paid 124,600 with 5 year wide included.
