  1. Yesterday I received a letter from my housing agency containing a survey of whether the tenants would be moving out by the end of October or not.

    1. What should I expect out of this? Is this a sign that my place would be demolished soon? The building is pretty old but not ruined or anything. I *really* like my current apartment and would strongly prefer not to move.

    2. What’s the best move that would benefit me the most? The wording on the letter (“note that if you write that you’d be moving you can’t cancel it out later” etc.) makes it seem like they’re trying to gaslight me into moving to avoid the eviction money compensation.

  2. went back to visit my parents in my home country and left my health insurance card there when i transferred stuff to a new wallet, parents apparently shredded it thinking it was expired or not needed. Do I have to report it still? I see that lost = report, damaged = no report but since it’s not at risk of someone else having it.. do I need to do the whole police report thing?

    (Tokyo, setagaya if that matters)

  3. Moving into a “mansion” style building soon, so you open the doors and get in, and then you’re in the lobby/mailbox area, and there’s an intercom with the key hole, and finally another door opens to the stairs/elevator to the rooms. It’s my first time living in this kinda building, as for the past 5 years I’ve been in 2 “apato” apartment style buildings with no autolock or lobby.

In general, how do Amazon/package deliveries work? Currently for my building, they’ll just come up the steps and ring my intercom, or leave it front of my door, but how does it work for mansion apartments?

If a driver comes with a package will they first try to ring my room? And if I’m home, can I buzz the door open and they’ll walk up to my door? Or do I have to go down to the lobby to meet them?

If I’m not home/no response, would they leave it in the lobby area (right now for my apaato I can memo to leave it front of my door), or just drop off a cannot be delivered slip in my maolbox?

And lastly, I think my mansion apartment has a few delivery boxes/lockers. Do I just have to indicate that the option is available, and after delivery I’ll get a code, or do I have to set anything up?

PS, for food orders like Dominos/uber eats, would I go down to get the food in the lobby, or buzz them up to my room?

  4. <rant warning>

Why is Costco Online so bad in Japan? I’m accustomed to a typical Japanese ecommerce website quality now after 11 years here but even I was surprised by the extent of this bullshit.

    – Pages take 10 seconds to load
    – Registration takes multiple tries with trial and error and expects the customer to input info in a very, very specific way
    – Credit card entry screen does not support copy-paste and there is literally no way to know this unless you try to enter the card info by hand

    (list goes on and on)

  5. I have an overseas android phone. So only way to get commuter pass is by using suica card for JR lines..

Now I just moved, and using different line besides JR line. How do you get the commuter pass if I use JR and Den-en-toshi line at the same time? Will it be separate IC cards?

  6. I just got my new residence card (three years yay!) and have a question about the “landing permission” sticker from my original residence card and entry visa. They didn’t give me a new one, so is that an issue? Will I get one next time I reenter the country? I’ve had airport workers at other airports give me a hard time when I was flying to Japan because my “visa didn’t match” so I’m worried someone is going to give me a hard time again when I try to fly once my current landing permission sticker expires since most people don’t know about residence cards.
