Dependent visa: my husband is not affiliated with the country Im applying from

Hi, I would greatly appreciate some help. I have dual citizenship. My husband and I are legally married in Europe and we live in Europe. He is from a non-English speaking European country (a different European country from me). We were married in a European country we are both residents of but neither of our passports are from the country we got married in. I’m applying as a US citizen because that is my English-speaking country. Can I take him as my dependent to Japan?

  1. Is it an EU country? If yes I bet it would be ok. It might be a headache for the visa

  2. This is one of those questions we’re not qualified to answer really. This sub can help with general topics, but specific visa information is best asked directly to your embassy/consulate/JET coordinator. Anything you get here is gonna be a guess.

I feel like you should be able to take him because I’m sure they understand that people move around and marry whoever they marry. But sometimes visas are complicated, so who knows. Just ask them.

  3. Yes you’re fine. Where you got married is irrelevant, you simply need proof of marriage. No issues.

When he applies for the dependent visa he references your visa number. Proof of marriage required. It’s a simple process.
