Hi, I am currently working in Japan and plan to leave back to the US at the end of december. Due to current covid restrictions the flight tickets pretty steep, do you guys think I should wait for the restrictions to be lowered or should I buy the tickets early? Thanks.

Tickets aren’t going to get cheaper. December, especially leading up to xmas and new years, is very expensive. If you can, pick another month to leave. Otherwise you’ll have to bite the bullet. For international flights the earlier you book the better, but all airlines now immediately hike prices for seasons like December, even months and months in advance.
There is a small chance you can grab a same or next day flight in December for much cheaper. Like the next day after you buy the ticket you leave. But that’s a very dangerous game to play with visa status, place to live, etc.
Buy it this month. The fuel surcharge for many airlines has been increasing and is due to increase again soon. You shouldn’t expect things to be any cheaper later on and, with the relaxations that are apparently coming soon, there may be more competition for the seats.
