how to practically move to a new city

when i last found a new apartment in tokyo it was a long, tedious and manual process of physically walking to a fudosanyasan in the area i was interested in and asking for what they had available. After a couple of weeks of work i found something i liked. This was feasible due to the fact that i already lived in tokyo.

however now considering to move to another city, how to you logistically and practically go about that in the most efficient way. lets say i live in tokyo and want to move to like, kanazawa or whatever. id want to avoid going back and forth weekend after weekend browsing apartmentoptions. is it perhaps best to move to some kind of weekly mansion in osaka first, and then start looking for apartments when located in osaka? or
