Arriving to Narita Int’l 8:30pm Sun night and planning to depart straight to Osaka/Kyoto first thing in the morning – where to hang in Tokyo until then or just get a hotel room?

Hi!

Visiting Japan from San Francisco for the first time this weekend and will land at Narita at 8:30pm and plan to go straight to Osaka very first train – from what I am seeing, trains going that way shut down around 9pm, so will be in Tokyo until then.

Question is – should I just get a cheap hotel room until the first train or challenge myself to wander around somewhere around Tokyo until that train? Only there for a week, so i'd absolutely prefer not to waste time. Also, would there be anything to even do in Tokyo on a Sunday night/Mon morning?

Thanks and welcome to any suggestions!

(Also, what time is the first direct train to Osaka? lol)

  1. Narita Airport pretty much shuts down at night so there’s not much to do or eat late at night. There’s a capsule hotel and a regular hotel in the airport but they’re kinda expensive as expected, the capsule hotel gets booked up pretty quickly. There’s a few hotels near the airport that have free shuttle buses to and from so it’s worth checking them out. I stayed in one for like $60CAD a night and it’s definitely better than camping at the airport.

Trains run later than 9pm into the city center. The Skyliner goes until 1030-11pm so you could catch that to get to Ueno and find a cheap hotel there for a night. After a long flight, it’s best to get some decent rest.
