Recycling Store that’ll buy my furniture?

Hi,

So this is rather last "minute." I'm moving back home on the 20th and have plans for a recycle shop (Gakusei Recycle, which I think is also Arc Recycle or something?) to basically clear out my apartment. They'll only buy the cutlery and stove, though. They won't buy anything else – not the bed frame, kotatsu table, fridge, TV stand, bookshelf, etc.

It's a bit upsetting because my bed is a brand new ikea bed (it's about 5-6 months old, my mum bought it for me because I literally couldn't afford a bed in the beginning), and my other furnishings are also only 5-6 months old. My washer machine is 6 years old, though, and I have no idea about how old my fridge is.

However, they said they'll take everything off them if I pay them 31,000 yen, which doesn't really sit well with me. I've been to their shop. I know they sell everything I have, and they sell it for a decent amount. So, basically, they're going to make money off me and then they're going to make money off whoever buys these items. It's a clever plan, but 31,000 just seems like too much on things they'll resell… I feel like they're taking advantage of the fact I'm foreign and need to leave on the 20th.

In Sakyo-ku, are there any recycling stores that would buy my furnishings, or at least take them for free? I think the bed thing bothers me the most, probably because it feels like my mum's money going to waste. She literally bought me a new bed, and now we're seeing nothing for it. In fact, I have to pay even more to get rid of it.

I need everything gone by the September 18th the latest.

  1. hey! not exclusively sakyo ku, but you can arrange delivery pick up at second street or delivery kingdom (they don’t guarantee that they buy your staff and be ready to get a ramen set equal in yen for that). you can also try your luck as well in immigrant chat groups on Facebook or mercari (also try your luck in university/Japanese language school chats of you have any acquaintances from your circle). the new semester is about to begin, so you may save someone a fortune by a direct bargain. btw, plz dm me about the tv stand and dish washer if you’re comfortable

  2. Can try Jimothy (ジモティ) where you can list and price the items you want to sell (or give Free) and list them for self-collection only, deadline etc. It’s in Japanese only. Especially good if you need to dispose items that will cost you money to throw.

The usual recycle shops would require you to bring over the items for quote/sales.

EDIT: For Fridge and Washing Machine, because of the Recycle Fee of around ¥4,000-6000 required to properly dispose of it, you probably won’t get a price for old units. (Hence they would say they’re doing you a favor by taking it off your hand for free).
