Hello everyone,
I moved to Higashiyama from Nishikyogoku two months ago. My house is just five minutes away from Ninenzaka. This area is very lively with tourists, but I want to engage more with the local community.
Lately, I’ve been traveling around Japan on my days off. For example, I went to Kanazawa last week, and it was a great experience. However, from now on, I’d like to focus more on Kyoto.
I want to socialize with local residents. I know bars are usually the first thing that comes to mind, but are there any other ways I can connect with the local community? Especially here in Higashiyama?
I don’t want to stay at home all the time or just go traveling; I’d like to get involved and socialize more locally.
Also my Japanese is around N3 level, and i really want to improve my Japanese.

I’m just a bit north of you. My social life centers around dance (salsa and bachata), mostly on Friday evening near Sanjo Kiyamachi, and on cycling…. taking the bicycle out into the mountains to enjoy some nature. If you have interest in either, or just a coffee sometime, drop me a PM.
afaik Higashiyama (at least the area around Kiyomizu-Gojo St.) has a fairly elderly population. At least that’s what my new elderly neighbors have been telling me and I don’t see many kids around since moving here recently. The locals get together once a month for coffee and to talk about neighborhood things, and arrange to clean up the local park where they also do the old stretching exercises once week or so. I’m gonna skip the exercises (I’m not that old yet) but I plan on joining the meetings and help clean up the park. Who knows what else they do (or what I can get going… I’m thinking boules!). So maybe hit up a neighbor and see how to get involved in helping out or socializing with them? Great way to practice Japanese too!
