I have noticed that in their website amex states that if you move to another country they will guarantee you one card one time with that country version of amex. Has anyone actually done this ?

They cannot guarantee with Japan as they use JCB here. Separate application is required. I have been using Amex locally even though I have a US one too
I have a US Amex and then did the Japanese Amex application after getting here in March. It all went smooth enough (except for a middle name issue lol). I applied for the normal ANA Amex (basically the lowest annual membership).
I will say, one thing to watch out for in regards to Japanese credit in general is that your entire balance gets paid monthly, so don’t go HAM. That’s why stores give the multi-month payment option.
Are you trying to get the ETC Amex to get points fir ETC tolls?
What benefits does the Japanese amex have if any over an American Amex?
