Making a key copy

I recently rented an apartment with my girlfriend, and it is legal for us to live in that apartment. However only 1 key was given and apparently the landlords want to charge 25000 for another.

Is it legal to simply bring the key to a locksmith to copy, if I have a proof of residence?

  1. You don’t need any kind of proof for most key shops. If they have the tools to make a copy, they will. Some high-security keys need to be special ordered – well, the key stock itself needs to be ordered, then it has to be cut. This can take weeks.

At work they told me that my office key could not be copied. I took it to the nearest shop and they copied it in 5 minutes.

  2. No problem at all. Just take it to any key shop and make a copy. Make sure not to inform the landlord about it

  3. It’s a registered key system and the shop that copies the key will have to report it. My apartment has the same setup and i just went through this while making two additional keys for my kids.
