Is the sugar different here?

I'm from North America and back there, whenever I would have boxed biscuits, premade sugar cookies, gummy candy, even things we have here like Oreos, I always got this bad aftertaste in my mouth that almost goes sour, so I would never really eat sweets. But since living here, I've tried LOTS of grocery store biscuits, sugary snacks, gummy candies, and Oreos to compare, and I don't get that awful aftertaste. I also don't feel as bad afterwards. Any idea what specifically is different in the mass-produced sweets here? (I'm not talking about bakeries or hand made/small batch treats)
