I suspect someone tried to steal my underwear yesterday

I (31 F) live on a first floor (dumb mistake on my behalf) and have been hanging out my socks and underwear on these 100¥ racks from Daiso outside since I moved in (about 5 months ago) and never had any issues. So last night I was laying on my futon with the lights off and heard a strange noise as if it were very windy and my rack was twirling around, except it was not windy at all last night. I turned on the light and went to open my window, I saw no one but one of the “strings” from the rack was loose and one of my panties gone. I’m not like super upset about or anything but when I was told it was common occurrence here in Japan I thought people were just exaggerating and I was curious to know if any of you have had a similar first-hand or second-hand experience with this.

  1. Never in my life have I heard this happen unless someone is stalking you or is obsessed with you 👀 Try to keep your doors/windows locked and make sure that you have a taser and/or pepper spray with you at all times.

  2. i think you are not wrong, that is the reason single japanese girls never choose first floor apartment as first choice.

  3. There is a superstition in Japan that hanging out your washing at night invites ghosts.

You got the Ghost of Panchi-fetchi. Keep him away by only doing your washing during the day.

  4. Don’t leave your laundry out at night. Not just because of the pervs but also because the forecast might be wrong and it could rain at 3am. Also there could be more bugs out at night.

Obviously I don’t know shit, but … I hope you have things in place that would prevent people from forcing their way into your place when the window is open a crack for air. If you’re hanging your laundry visibly outside and it’s all female garments in a place where any rando can just jump up to, you’re sort of advertising to the assholes. You shouldn’t have to think about this stuff. And I recommend that you do if you hadn’t so far and this could be an issue.

  5. This happened to us, my sister actually. 8 years ago me and sister lived together on the first floor of a Leopalace apartment. My sister sometimes asked me if I knew where her underwear was because she didn’t see them for a while but we did not keep track so we just let it go and forgot about it. One day, a policeman showed up at our doors asking my sister if the underwear was her. Apparently, they caught a man who stole women’s underwear, investigated his place and found a bunch of underwear. He also admitted that he stole my sister’s underwear from our balcony. We never knew who that man was, but learned a lesson. We never rented 1st floor again.

  6. I’ve been living in a first floor for many years, and always hang my laundry, including delicates outside, where it can bee seen from the street, and a bit of effort, stolen.

But this has never happened to me, maybe nobody likes my XXL men’s underwear with skid marks on them? Is it time for me to buy new underwear? I feel left out, what am I doing wrong?
