After an unfortunate incident at my favorite izakaya last week, I have now witnessed cockroaches crawling on the tables and counters where customers are eating in at least three restaurants, but the other customers and staff don't seem to care. I was shocked when the staff didn't offer me some sort of discount or coupon after I complained about a roach on my table the last time. Do the Japanese really not care about roaches in restaurants? Given how "clean" Japan is, how can so many restaurants and izakayas be so overrun with roaches that have no problem scurrying around even when people are present?
