Tips on getting from Tokyo to Hakone Ginyu (Ryokan)?

Hi! My husband and I are going to Japan for 3 weeks beginning middle of May 2025. After our first 4 nights in Tokyo, we’ll be leaving our hotel (Hotel New Otani the Main) and going to Hakone Ginyu Ryokan for 2 nights. Online, generally it says to take a taxi from hotel to Odawara Station, after that ride, take the Hakone Tozan Line to Miyanoshita Station , and finally take a taxi to Hakone Ginyu. We will be traveling with some luggage and I’m concerned that could be an issue along the way, it is our first time in Japan. Has anyone made a similar trek, and what is your recommended route?

  1. Get the train to Shinjuku and take the Romace Car to Odawara and take the Hakone Tozan Bus to Miyanoshita. Might be the easiest way to get to Hakone Ginyu. Regarding the luggage I would forward the luggage to the next station after Hakone and pack only a carry on for two nights at Ginyu. You dont need the big luggage. Its inconvenient to travel with the train and bus 😉

    From the website :
Tokyo Sta. JR Shinkansen →Odawara Sta. (30 min. by train)―Hakone Tozan Railway (40 min. by train) →Miyanoshita Sta. 3 min. walk
Shinjuku Sta. Odakyu Romance Car →Hakone-Yumoto Sta. (90 min. by train)―Hakone Tozan Railway (30 min. by train) →Miyanoshita Sta. 3 min. walk
Odawara Sta. (East Gate) Hakone Tozan Bus (30 min. by bus) →Miyanoshita 1 min. walk
Hakone-Yumoto Sta. Hakone Tozan Bus (15 min. by bus) →Miyanoshita 1 min. walk

  2. Are you taking the taxi from Tokyo to Odawara? That’s going to cost a fortune. I think it’s an hour+ drive, if not more. I am going in November and I would recommend looking into the Limited Express Train that runs from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto, then you can take the Hakone Tozan Line to Miyanoshita Station.

I am also looking at buying the Hakone Free pass which comes in both 2 or 3 day passes. It will allow you to use all of the transportation in Hakone without extra surcharges (i.e. cable car, Hakone Tozan Line, ropeway, cruise). For luggage, if it isn’t a lot, I’d just go to your ryokan first and see if they’ll let you drop it off prior to check in. I suspect they won’t have a problem. However, if you do not want to lug your luggage around, you can try to send it up by luggage carrier service apparently: [https://www.hakonenavi.jp/international/en/wp-content/themes/hakonenavi/assets/img/file/hakone_baggage.pdf](https://www.hakonenavi.jp/international/en/wp-content/themes/hakonenavi/assets/img/file/hakone_baggage.pdf)
