Really struggling to improve listening comprehension

So as my reading comprehension gets better (i.e. more vocab, grammar points and general immersion as to what natural japanese language sounds like) my delta between actually understanding spoken japanese is growing at a worrying rate. I was recently listening to an interview and while I was able to understand a surprising amount of what the Japanese subtitles were saying I had to rewind multiple times to actually parse out the words for my ear.

As someone with aspirations of working in Japan this is something I need to fix, but I'm concerned that the simple "just get more audio input" won't work. I.e. I'm curious if there's a specific intervention that I should be doing WHILE studying audio input as opposed to getting more of it.

Does anyone have any advice regarding this?

Edit: was referring to subtitles in Japanese not in English
