Japanese Tattoo

Hi,

I am really interested in getting a tattoo in Japanese wording but I don’t know anything about the language. I want to get Johanna (female name) tattooed in Japanese, I would like to know the accurate translation of the name in Kana and Kanji please as I am afraid to trust google translate.

Thanks for your help 🙂

  1. Do you want to get a tattoo that means ‘small barbecue grill’? Because that’s exactly what happened to Arianna Grande when she got a kanji tattoo. If you’re deliberately going for a comedy angle just get it off of Google translate. If you’re serious be very very aware that you can’t throw a rock on the internet without finding a kanji tattoo whoops story, and maybe that’s a sign not to.

  2. I don’t think names can be “translated” esp between two completely different languages..you can find combinations of kanjis with the similar pronunciation but i wouldnt say their “translations” of your name (basically sounding out the name). It would have a completely different meaning and background

  3. For future reference — tattoo translations (even names in kana) should probably be posted in r/translator (see rule #7 of r/learnjapanese).

  4. i really wouldn’t recommend doing this, though if you really want to the most upvoted answers are technically correct

  5. how do you pronounce your name, that will change the kana used

for example do you say ‘joe anna’ or ‘joe arna’ ‘joe hannah’

kana is fully sound based unlike english which doesnt always sound like how it reads
